“You’re going to enjoy the personal, private space around the house. Living on the historic Chehalis Western Trail gives you easy access North or South. Beautiful nature walks in all seasons and an easy ride into Lacey for coffee. I use it most for running and distance bike rides. Lots of great restaurants close by, like Hop Jacks, Firecreek Ale House and Farrelli’s. Pellegrino’s is my favorite Italian.”

Welcome to sweet little Sumner! This gem of a home is tucked away in a quiet little cul-de-sac, but so close to everything to love about downtown Sumner – the Rhubarb Pie Capital!

It’s called the Rhubarb Pie Capital because they really know how to honor rhubarb. The Sumner valley produces amazingly tall and thick rhubarb and they serve up some darn good Rhubarb pie, with the kind of pie crust that’s been handed down from generations of grandmas. Just head on over to the mom and pop operation  Berryland Cafe, if you want to know what an outstanding pie tastes like. If you’re a pie baker, start whipping yours up now for that blue ribbon and enter the Rhubarb Bake-Off at the Sumner’s Rhubarb Days in August. If pie eating is more your style, there’s a contest for that too.

If you can’t wait until August for a pie event, then mark your calendar for April 7th for the Daffodil Festival – an annual tradition since 1926. The Daffodil Festival Grand Floral Parade is an annual celebration of the community, history, traditions, and growth, of its home of Pierce County. It consists of over 180 entries, including floats, bands, marching and always revolves around fresh-cut daffodils, hence the name. The theme for this year’s parade is “Traditions in Bloom.” Come join the fun, music and food, featuring Stack’s Burgers, Fries & Shakes (their burgers are amazing!), Hamhock Jones BBQ/Soul Food, Farrelli’s Pizza Mobile Oven, Hometown Dogs and some local staples like, Trackside Pizza, Stuck Junction Saloon, Sorci’s Italian Cafe (best crab mac n cheese I’ve ever tasted), Berryland Cafe, Buttered Biscuit (see below) and more!

The Buttered Biscuit is one of the best places to grab breakfast in downtown – it’s so popular that there’s often a line waiting to be seated. It’s not hard to see why with their big portions of filling, American comfort food in homey surroundings. No matter what you get off the menu, you must have a piece of their thick, warm cornbread with sweet cream.

Now, Sumner isn’t just all about delicious food, although it’s a pretty nice bonus to live so close to all these incredible, locally owned eateries. There are also a ton of locally owned shops too, all along Main Street. The most popular store in town though that out of towners even flock too is the Old Cannery Furniture Warehouse – a proud family owned and operated store. It’s the go-to place for artisan and leather furniture and unique home furnishing.

If you’re looking for some other local places to get out and about to, there are several local parks to choose from. Loyalty Park, recently received a makeover and added a zip line, a tilted sky runner (an overhead spinning piece of play equipment) and several tilted and spinning seats. It also has standard slides, jungle gym and swing sets. There’s also lots of big trees that provide a ton of shade, a large green lawn area and many picnic tables with grills. Rainier View Park, aptly named for its stunning view of Mount Rainier. It’s a unique and beautiful art space with mosaic benches to sit on. It also has a playground, a basketball court, picnic areas – and an insider tip, it’s also a place to find hand painted, hidden rocks from the Sumner Rock’s art group. Both parks are about a 5 minute drive away.

If you’ve got a bit of a green thumb, you’ll be excited to know that Windmill Gardens is less than a mile away and the destination for garden inspiration! Their amazing full service plant staff can provide you with plenty of info to spruce up your flowers beds, plant info, fresh cut flower delivery, hanging baskets, custom services and floral arrangements for parties and weddings. They also have some great events coming up – Ciscoe Morris will be there on 4/6 for a green club talk! Don’t miss the Windmill Bistro for some nice, casual cuisine after you’ve taken a stroll mapping out your future garden. They also have a spa & salon, a tea shop and a pond store.

For all your grocery shopping needs, Fred Meyer is less than a mile away.

Commuters will appreciate the short drive to Sumner’s Sounder Station – less than 2 miles, as well as the quick access to Highway 167 – 6 miles away.
